James Callanan, Jr. papers, 1841-1864.

This collection includes: two letter copy books recording Callanan's outgoing communications from Albany on financial and legal transactions with business partner Schuyler Ingham and other prominent Des Moines citizens including Marcellus Crocker, C.C. Cole and B. F. Allen (1858-1863); ledges (June-August 1857) and journal (June 1857-July 1, 1858) from the banking partnership with Stevens and Ingham; a record book of the Oneida Conference Seminary's Phoenix Debating Association (May 1, 1841-March 4, 1853); a scrapbook of miscellaneous clippings maintained by Callanan (1840s-1860s) and 20 Union Congressional Committee political leaflets distributed by the Union Congressional Committee; and one letter (June 18, 1885) written to Callanan's wife, Martha -- a prominent figure in Iowa's suffrage and temperance organizations -- concerning the Benedict Home for Friendless Girls that she co-founded.

MARTHA COONLEY CALLANAN was born in Albany County, New York, May 18, 1826. Her youthful days were spent on a farm near the Hudson River. She received a good education in the schools of Albany and in 1846 was married to James Callanan. In 1863 they removed to Iowa, locating at Des Moines. Mrs. Callanan took a deep interest in the reform movements of the times and in 1870 was one of the organizers of the State Equal Suffrage Association, which was established at a convention held in Des Moines. Callanan was a native of Albany, N.Y. He received his education at Oneida Conference Seminary and started a law practice in his home town. In 1857 he formed a banking partnership with Andrew J. Stevens and Schuyler R. Ingham of Des Moines, Iowa. The partnership was launched in June 1857 as Andrew J. Stevens & Co., then continued under the name of Callanan and Ingham in August 1857.
